Artist Profile

Vicki was born in Christchurch, New Zealand and spent her early years growing up in country New Zealand.

The visual ideas behind her work have always related to important themes in her personal life – the environment, natural and man made, and the concepts philosophies and histories attached to the human condition.

Vicki studied at the University of Otago then at the Otago school of Art and subsequently at Fluxus contemporary jewellery workshop/gallery. She then established her own workshop within the Attic Studio, before taking a year long residency in France.

A year spent living in Strasbourg, France reinforced for Vicki her sense of belonging in the Pacific and led to a renewed appreciation of the flora found in this area. On relocating to Sydney, her work continued to be informed by her fascination with native flora from the pacific. Her family has a long horticulture history and its influence affects her profoundly. Plants as motif have featured throughout her bodies of work as they represent for her life, death and a sense of place and belonging.

As a professional artist Vicki has been awarded several grants to enable her to develop professionally. In 2000 she received an Australia Council Mentorship Grant to work with Catherine Truman at Gray Street workshop in Adelaide. During 2003 Vicki was awarded an international residency at Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK as part of an international jewellery exchange funded by the British and Australian arts boards.
