Venus Glass
Artist ProfileArtist Profile
Venus Hot Glass is a small Christchurch-based glass blowing studio operated by glass artists Ian Walters and Tokiko Tatemoto.
They make their glass from a mixture of minerals including silica sand from Mt. Somers in the mid-Canterbury region. Once mixed these materials are then melted in a furnace at 1300ºC to form molten glass. The glass is kept hot enabling it to be blown or manipulated into a variety of forms. Crushed coloured glass is melted into the clear molten glass to give every piece its own unique and funky appearance.
Artist Statement
Working with molten glass is hot, challenging and sometimes frustrating...the
process is very exciting and addictive. It requires intense concentration
and stamina to form soft glowing material into hard transparent colourful
glass creations, which are in total contrast to the inferno from which
they were born.
