Artist Statement - Mountain Mood Vessels

Irwin uses the lost wax method of casting glass and works with simple and organic forms. Her work often draws in elements of natural subtlety - the dipping lines at the base of her vessels in the Mountain Mood series refer to the strata layers seen in exposed landforms. In her latest work, the introduction of a second and sometimes third colour into the forms has allowed Irwin to introduce a conceptual depth to the pieces. The colour in the base of the vessel, sometimes only revealing itself on close inspection, represents the molten lava within the mountain or the inner fire/passion within us all.

The Mountain Mood series of vessels are inspired by the majestic cone of Mt. Ngaruhoe in the Central Plateau of the North Island, New Zealand.

The vessels in vibrant fire colours represent the active phase of the volcano.

The vessels in more subtle shades and clear glass are the mountain in winter, snow covered and calm in appearance, but within the base we see the molten magma.

Mountain Mood Silhouette, in black opaque glass with a coloured rim, is the dark brooding aspect of the mountain silhouetted in the fading light.

Irwin pushes the boundaries of the casting process to achieve delicate and fine pieces. The solid bases of her cylinders and bowls contrast with the very fine and delicate rims.

"As a Clinical Psychologist working with people under stress, I value the moments of reflective contemplation in life. When I work with glass I'm looking to create a work that has containment and a simplicity which provides a moment of quietness for the viewer."
