Artist Statement

I have been carving Jade since 2001 and became full time in July 2003 when I set up my own workshop in Greymouth.
The daily challenges of being self employed and satisfying my creative urges have been a rewarding experience. I look forward to continuing my journey of discovery and learning through Jade as a medium.
My designs tend to be simple but with an emphasis on the qualities of the stone such as the colour variations or its ability to hold a good edge. Recently I have been exploring the tactile nature of jade within some designs with textured surfaces as added features.
Living on the coast is a constant source of inspiration to my work. Being able to surf and explore the mountains locally keeps my restlessness at bay and enables me to focus on carving and designing, which is constantly refreshed by every new swell or trip into a new valley.
In 2005 James was the winner of the Body Adornment Section of the Annual Left Bank Gallery Greenstone Carving Completion in Greymouth.
