Ben began making jewellery in 1995. He is self-taught becoming inspired to make jewellery after looking to buy a ring and finding nothing he liked. Having spent time in the workshop of family friend Daniel Clasby as a child, he felt confident to set to work at the kitchen table producing a series of rings. Patterns he had formerly applied to ceramic pieces were transferred to silver rings and a change in career took place.
In 1998 he opened Royal Jewellery Studio in Kingsland, Auckland. Based in the former Royal Theatre, he displays work from over 35 of New Zealand's contemporary jewellers. Moving north to The Bay of Islands in 2004 he now divides his time between working in store at Royal and his home based workshop in Kerikeri.
"I love making pieces of jewellery using various metals including silver, gold and platinum combined with sparkling gemstones. Also adding textural finishes often hammered or engraved into the surface contrasted by polished smooth surfaces is really satisfying. It is also really nice to know that something you produce may become someone's personal treasure and may even survive through more than one generation".
